Carmel Valley Ranch is a 500 acre estate including a golf course, sports facility with pool, lodge clubhouse with pool, and 144 hotel units with guest suites. Coastal oak woodlands surrounded the facilities which include some magnificent Coast Live Oak specimens. Due to new ownership, renovations were aimed at the lodge clubhouse, pool, event plaza, and all landscape areas around the units which were outdated.
Specific design challenges were to effectively communicate plants to be removed, remain, or to be transplanted to the installing landscape contractor and to choose a plant pallet with specific low water designations while being deer resistant. As result of the water efficient planting and irrigation retrofits, Carmel Valley Ranch was able to reallocate water use for future developments.
Other design components include hardscape improvements for accessibility, new requirements for pool paving, and ornamental paving; water features; outdoor fire pits; wind screening, incorporating outdoor sculpture, as well as creating an overall planting theme which compliments and creates an identity for the estate.
